Where to Stay
Near Columbus, Mississippi

The Wremy House is located in Starkville, Mississippi — about 26 minutes' drive from Columbus. For groups that need more than a hotel room or two, Starkville is often the more practical base.

People travel to Columbus for particular reasons: a wedding at one of the antebellum homes, a Mississippi University for Women event, a graduation or assignment at Columbus Air Force Base, the Tennessee Williams Tribute, or the spring Pilgrimage. Those weekends put pressure on a small lodging market, and a family of ten quickly runs out of options.

Starkville is a straight 26-minute run west on Highway 82. That's close enough to attend an evening event in Columbus and be home the same night, and far enough that rates and availability behave differently.

Drive times from The Wremy House

Downtown Columbus is about 26 minutes. Columbus Air Force Base is roughly 35 minutes. Mississippi University for Women is about 27 minutes. West Point sits between the two, about 30 minutes north. Mississippi State University is under two miles from the front door.

When Starkville is the better base

Stay in Starkville if your group is larger than two hotel rooms, if you want a full kitchen and a private yard, if any part of the trip involves Mississippi State, or if you want restaurants and a walkable district in the evening. Stay in Columbus itself if your event runs very late downtown or on base, or if you need to be within walking distance of a venue.

About The Wremy House

The property is one fully renovated house with two sides joined by an interior door. The Main House sleeps 8 with two king-size bedrooms and an upstairs bonus room holding two queen-size beds. The Cottage sleeps 6 with a king bedroom, a queen bedroom and a queen pull-out sofa. Together they sleep 14 across roughly 3,200 square feet, with three full bathrooms, two kitchens, a shared deck with dining for six and a gas-assisted charcoal grill.

It sits five blocks north of Main Street in downtown Starkville, which means a Columbus wedding on Saturday and brunch downtown on Sunday are both easy from the same address.

Combining a Columbus trip with Mississippi State

Many guests pair the two: a Columbus event on one day and a Bulldogs football, basketball or baseball game on the next. All of Mississippi State's venues are a few minutes from the house, so the group can split up during the day and still eat dinner together.
